European nations deploy aircraft and personnel to combat wildfires across the continent

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The ongoing wildfire crisis in Europe has prompted a significant increase in coordinated firefighting efforts across multiple countries. As fires persist in various regions, Belgium and Spain sought assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism due to the strain on their national resources. In response, aircraft, helicopters, and ground units have been dispatched to support local firefighting teams in both nations. Additionally, authorities have utilized satellite imagery to monitor fire zones and aid emergency response planning across several European areas.

EU wildfire support brings aircraft, crews and satellite mapping to affected regions.

Belgium received two rescEU firefighting aircraft from Sweden for operations in the Hautes Fagnes region. Germany and Norway each contributed two helicopters, while Dutch aircraft also participated in the firefighting efforts. The latest assessments indicate that the fire has consumed over 3,000 hectares. Emergency personnel, military units, farmers, and international crews have been working across the affected zone, while authorities have implemented restrictions on roads and water access points used by responders.

By Monday evening, nearly 500 personnel and over 120 vehicles were involved in the Belgian firefighting operations. Ground crews focused on accessible areas, while aircraft targeted sections of the fire that remained difficult to reach. Farmers have played a vital role in maintaining water supplies for emergency teams operating around the blaze. Residents of Sourbrodt have been allowed to return home, although some residents of Küchelscheid continue to face restrictions due to ongoing fire conditions.

French firefighting crews bolster efforts in Spain

Support from France arrived in Spain in the form of 104 firefighters and 36 vehicles, aimed at strengthening firefighting operations in Aragón. When the aid arrived, approximately 16,000 hectares had already burned in the region. In response, Aragón authorities issued red alert for 14 fire danger zones on August 18, up from eight the previous day. Officials also noted the presence of extremely dry fuels across several central and northern areas, increasing the pressure on firefighting crews already battling active fires and monitoring vulnerable zones.

Satellite mapping supported response teams through the Copernicus Emergency Management Service, providing rapid imagery in Belgium, Spain, Greece, Germany, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, France, and Italy. These maps enable emergency managers to quantify burned areas and locate active fire zones. The European Commission coordinates international aid efforts via the civil protection system, allowing countries to request assistance and facilitate the deployment of personnel, equipment, and resources across borders when needed.

Shared European firefighting resources aid multiple nations

Ahead of the 2026 wildfire season, Europe maintained a joint reserve comprising 22 firefighting aircraft and five helicopters. Authorities also stationed 777 firefighters from 14 nations in Cyprus, Greece, Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal. This collaborative system enables governments to request help when their capacities are overwhelmed. Emergency coordinators then match these requests with available aircraft, crews, vehicles, and other resources offered by participating countries.

Currently, the response involves multiple independent fire emergencies rather than a single cross-border incident. Belgium continues to rely on aircraft, helicopters, ground teams, and local logistical support in the Hautes Fagnes. Meanwhile, Spain has integrated French firefighters and vehicles into its operations in Aragón. Across the continent, emergency services are also leveraging satellite data to monitor affected areas. By the end of July, the extent of burned land in Europe was approximately 2.5 times higher than the typical level for this period of the year.
