BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – Euro area annual inflation increased to approximately 3.3% in August 2026, climbing from 2.9% in July. The inflation rate was 2.8% in June and 2.0% in August 2025. Eurostat published the preliminary estimate on Sept. 1. Consumer prices rose 0.4% from July according to the harmonised index of consumer prices. This latest figure clearly indicates a rise in overall inflation across the eurozone.

Energy lifts euro area inflation to 3.3% in August
Energy inflation reached 14.3% as euro area consumer prices accelerated in August 2026.

The most significant annual increase among the main inflation categories was seen in energy prices. The energy inflation rate hit 14.3% in August, up from 10.3% in July. On a monthly basis, energy prices also grew by 2.9%. Meanwhile, services inflation declined slightly to 3.0% from 3.3%. Inflation for non-energy industrial goods increased to 1.2% from 0.9%. Food, alcohol, and tobacco inflation remained steady at 1.2%.

Month-to-month changes in measures excluding specific categories were more subdued. Inflation excluding energy held steady at 2.2% in August. The rate excluding energy, food, alcohol, and tobacco decreased slightly to 2.4% from 2.5%. Inflation excluding energy and unprocessed food fell to 2.1% from 2.2%. These metrics offer alternative perspectives on price fluctuations after removing categories prone to sharp monthly swings.

Energy prices drive August inflation upward

Inflation rates showed notable differences across the 21 eurozone countries. Lithuania recorded the highest estimate at 5.8%, while Cyprus reached 5.2% and Bulgaria 5.1%. Spain’s inflation was 4.5%, Belgium’s 4.2%, and Luxembourg’s 4.0%. Estonia reported the lowest at 1.3%. Malta followed at 1.9%, with Finland at 2.4%. Germany stood at 2.9%, France at 2.7%, and Italy at 3.2%.

Variation in monthly consumer price movements was also considerable across the bloc. Belgium saw a 2.1% rise from July, while Luxembourg increased by 1.8%. Cyprus experienced a 1.5% monthly gain. France and Bulgaria each rose by 0.8%, with Ireland, Spain, and Malta increasing by 0.6%. Finland observed a 0.4% decline. Slovakia experienced no change, Germany’s prices rose by 0.2%, and Italy’s increased slightly by 0.1%.

The expanded euro area influences 2026 data scope

Since Bulgaria adopted the euro on Jan. 1, 2026, the eurozone now comprises 21 countries. Data up to December 2025 reflect the previous 20-member composition, while figures from January 2026 incorporate the enlarged currency area. The European Union statistical system applies a chain-index formula when membership changes occur, ensuring the inflation series accurately represent the current structure while maintaining consistency with earlier reports.

Eurostat is scheduled to release the full harmonised consumer-price data for August on Sept. 17, 2026. The subsequent flash estimate for September inflation is set for Oct. 2. The harmonised index measures changes in the prices consumers pay for goods and services. Yearly inflation compares prices to the same month one year prior, whereas monthly inflation captures the short-term price movement from the previous month, offering a distinct view of inflation trends across the euro area.
