Bitcoin price dips under $80,000 as $1 trillion crypto rout deepens

Bitcoin has experienced a sharp downturn, briefly plunging below $80,000 amid a broader cryptocurrency market decline that has wiped out approximately $1 trillion in market value. The downturn, which follows a record-setting all-time high near $110,000, has fueled concerns of further instability as market analysts warn of potential price suppression. The recent correction comes as traders are advised against “buying the dip,” with technical indicators suggesting a possible continuation of the downward trend.

Bitcoin price dips under $80,000 as $1 trillion crypto rout deepens

According to Ruslan Lienkha, chief of markets at crypto platform YouHodler, Bitcoin could test support levels around $70,000 if negative sentiment persists in equity markets. U.S. stock indices have also seen consecutive days of decline, raising questions about whether this represents a temporary correction or a broader shift in market direction. Market analysts, including Markus Thielen, founder of 10x Research, highlight Bitcoin’s adherence to an ascending broadening wedge pattern, which suggests a target price in the low $70,000s.

Analysts predict Bitcoin correction could deepen further

Despite the correction, Bitcoin has since rebounded to around $85,000, leaving investors uncertain about its next major move. Adding to market volatility, investors have been withdrawing record amounts from Bitcoin ETFs, exacerbating selling pressure. However, a key development has emerged as BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, has introduced Bitcoin into its $150 billion model-portfolio ecosystem, marking a major milestone in institutional adoption. The move is being closely watched as a potential catalyst for renewed Bitcoin momentum.

BlackRock has allocated between 1% and 2% of its IBIT iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF within portfolios designed for high-risk investors. The firm played a pivotal role in securing U.S. approval for spot Bitcoin ETFs in 2023, leading to the rapid growth of Bitcoin-based investment funds. By November 2024, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs surpassed $100 billion in net assets, with BlackRock’s IBIT holding nearly 600,000 Bitcoin.

How BlackRock’s investment strategy affects Bitcoin’s future

Meanwhile, Michael Gates, lead portfolio manager for BlackRock’s Target Allocation ETF model portfolio suite, has expressed confidence in Bitcoin’s long-term investment potential, citing its diversification benefits. However, ETF analyst James Seyffart of Bloomberg Intelligence noted that while this move is significant, it remains uncertain whether Bitcoin will be incorporated into BlackRock’s primary investment models, which command significantly larger capital inflows.

The latest price fluctuations coincide with the release of the U.S. Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Index, which met expectations and reinforced speculation that the Federal Reserve may proceed with interest rate cuts. This macroeconomic backdrop, combined with increasing institutional demand and regulatory clarity, could provide the foundation for Bitcoin to break out of its current trading range and potentially push toward the psychologically significant $100,000 level. – By CryptoWire News Desk.
