Belgium’s Obesity-Related Deaths Reveal Strong Links to Heart Disease and Dementia

BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – In 2022, a total of 9,509 lives in Belgium were lost due to conditions associated with obesity—making up 8.2 percent of all deaths in the country, according to public health institute Sciensano. These weight-related health issues resulted in more than one death per hour, contributing to over 150,000 years of potential life lost nationwide. This data provides a new benchmark for Belgian health policymakers to assess and address obesity’s impact.

Belgian study links obesity to heart disease and dementia deaths
Scientific researchers study cardiovascular disease data to improve public health prevention.

The study conducted a thorough epidemiological analysis to uncover the root causes of death linked to high body mass index (BMI). It showed that cardiovascular problems are the leading cause, with coronary heart diseases responsible for 2,009 deaths. Neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia were linked to 1,652 fatalities. Cerebrovascular diseases contributed to 1,171 deaths, alongside notable numbers from chronic kidney disease and various digestive cancers.

Data broken down by demographics indicates that the risk of death related to excess weight grows significantly with age. Those aged 65 and above faced the highest rates of obesity-related health issues. Gender analysis revealed that male mortality rates generally surpassed those of females in most age groups. However, women aged 85 and older recorded higher overall death figures, a pattern attributed to their longer average lifespans, according to epidemiologists.

Higher Mortality Risks from Obesity Seen in Citizens Over 65

Regional differences in obesity-related death rates across Belgium are quite significant. The southern region of Wallonia had the highest mortality rate, with 95.21 deaths per 100,000 residents. The Brussels-Capitale region followed, with an age-standardized rate of 85 deaths per 100,000 residents. In contrast, Flanders experienced the lowest impact, with 73.60 deaths per 100,000. Experts suggest that these regional disparities reflect socioeconomic factors, dietary habits, and differences in healthcare access across Belgium’s federal regions.

This research release coincides with ongoing policy reviews guided by the Federal Public Service Health, which manages national health initiatives. Authorities are now utilizing these findings to evaluate the long-term economic strain that chronic non-communicable diseases impose on Belgium’s healthcare system. The researchers used a comparative risk assessment method, calculating the population attributable fraction for each disease to establish baseline estimates that will inform future preventative measures.

Cerebrovascular Disorders Are the Third Leading Cause of Death

On an international level, organizations such as the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control monitor similar metabolic risk factors to coordinate policies across the region. The Belgian report aligns with broader European Union health strategies aimed at reducing early deaths from non-communicable diseases. The World Health Organization continues to endorse comprehensive multi-sector approaches, including public education, nutritional labeling, and early clinical intervention, to address these risks.

These findings offer a solid evidence base for health authorities working to lower the prevalence of high BMI in Western Europe. Quantifying mortality figures and years of life lost enables policymakers to better allocate resources toward screening, targeted interventions, and lifestyle change programs. As regional health authorities interpret this data, national strategies are expected to prioritize early prevention to curb the widespread occurrence of chronic illnesses across Belgium and neighboring countries.
