FULDATAL, GERMANY / RankWire.AI / – Following recent incidents and escalating threats, Germany is stepping up its counter-drone efforts by deploying advanced detection and response systems at major airports and vital infrastructure sites. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt emphasized that tackling these challenges will be a prolonged endeavor for German security agencies. His comments were made during a visit to the Federal Police aviation unit in Fuldatal, Hesse. Dobrindt highlighted that rapid technological advancements in drone capabilities demand equally swift upgrades in detection and defensive measures.

Germany strengthens drone defenses at major airports
Federal authorities are increasing drone detection and defense capacity across Germany.

In December 2025, the Federal Police established a specialized counter-drone team to bolster security operations across Germany. Currently, this unit comprises roughly 70 personnel, with plans to expand to 300 officers by the end of 2026. Authorities also intend to grow the unit from four to eight locations nationwide, aiming to provide federal officers with wider operational coverage and quicker response times for incidents involving unauthorized drones.

Germany has designated eight primary airports for enhanced counter-drone protection under Federal Police authority. These include Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne/Bonn, Stuttgart, and Leipzig/Halle. The government is deploying mobile detection units capable of tracking, identifying, and neutralizing drones near sensitive aviation zones. Specific technical details remain undisclosed for security reasons. While federal officers are responsible for airport property, state police handle the surrounding areas.

Growth of federal drone unit follows Leipzig/Halle incident

The recent expansion garnered attention after an incident on August 4 at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany. Federal prosecutors reported that a drone carrying professional explosives and a detonator entered the airport grounds. Investigators are also examining a separate collision involving a cargo aircraft and an object believed to be another drone. The federal prosecutor took charge of the investigation on August 6, overseeing ongoing inquiries.

The Federal Criminal Police Office is conducting investigations under the authority of the federal prosecutor. Authorities have not publicly identified the individuals responsible for the Leipzig/Halle event, nor have they assigned blame publicly, as reviews of the evidence continue. This case has heightened official concern over drone-related risks to transport hubs and critical infrastructure. Responses are being coordinated across federal and state agencies within existing security frameworks.

New testing facility enhances drone defense research

On August 18, Germany inaugurated a Technology Center for Drone Security at the German Aerospace Center’s Cochstedt facility. This center will leverage research capabilities from the organization’s Braunschweig site, focusing on testing detection, tracking, and defense technologies under real-world conditions. The German Aerospace Center plans to invest over 10 million euros and create up to 40 new positions. The facility aims to bring together researchers, public security officials, and private tech firms for joint testing initiatives.

This new center complements Germany’s existing Joint Counter-Drone Centre, which facilitates coordination among federal and state authorities. The government has also expanded legal authorities for the Federal Police to identify and counter dangerous drones. Dobrindt stressed that authorities must continually develop systems to keep pace with rapidly evolving drone technology. Germany’s current strategy combines specialized police units, national coordination, and dedicated research efforts—forming the foundation of its broader initiative to strengthen defenses against unauthorized drone activities.
