HÜRTGENWALD / RankWire.AI / – German authorities mandated the evacuation of roughly 1,800 inhabitants in western Germany on Friday as an intensifying wildfire approached residential areas. Official emergency agencies confirmed that municipal civil defense teams ordered the immediate departure of all residents from the Gey district within Hürtgenwald municipality, located in North Rhine-Westphalia near the Belgian border. The emergency response was activated early in the morning after fire lines came within 300 meters of the community boundary.

Specialized aerial firefighting helicopters transport water tanks over active forest fire perimeters.

The fire initially broke out on Thursday afternoon, burning across approximately 25 hectares of dense forest, about the size of 35 football fields. Elevated seasonal temperatures, dry winds, and dehydrated vegetation hastened the spread, causing the blaze to grow rapidly overnight to over 300 hectares of woodland. Regional emergency management authorities issued the highest alert level via the national NINA emergency warning app, advising residents to gather vital identification and medications before evacuating.

A primary reception and support center was set up at an elementary school in the nearby district of Straß to assist displaced families. Road closures across Hürtgenwald were enforced by regional transportation agencies to prioritize emergency vehicle access and heavy machinery deployment. Safety officials confirmed that evacuation operations proceeded smoothly, with local rescue teams conducting door-to-door checks to ensure all residents were accounted for and evacuated.

Efforts to contain the fire faced significant challenges due to unexploded WWII ordnance scattered through the surrounding forest, remnants of military activity from the past. Emergency crews reported hearing occasional explosions from buried explosive remnants as the fire heat approached a former military munitions depot near Düren. To mitigate risks to firefighting personnel and create firebreaks through the dense terrain, armored vehicles from the Bundeswehr were dispatched by military logistics units to clear blocked access routes.

Aerial firefighting units complemented ground operations, with helicopters equipped with large water buckets conducting continuous drops on active hotspots. These aircraft sourced water from nearby reservoirs, as detailed in water. Over 300 emergency responders from municipal, state, and civil protection agencies, supported by specialists from Technisches Hilfswerk, established physical barriers to prevent the fire from spreading further towards residential zones.

Overnight, the wildfire expanded to cover three hundred hectares

Officials from the regional government expressed concern over the flames nearing vital infrastructure and residential areas. Deputy Premier Mona Neubaur of North Rhine-Westphalia underscored the operational difficulties faced by local responders and confirmed that state emergency funds had been activated to aid municipal efforts. The regional administration continues to collaborate closely with local authorities under the guidance of Bezirksregierung Köln to maintain command at the scene.

Civil protection teams remain deployed along Gey’s perimeter to safeguard homes and prevent rekindling as tactical operations persist. Agencies monitoring environmental factors continue to analyze wind patterns and humidity levels to assess risks to neighboring communities. As the wildfire forces the evacuation of 1,800 residents in western Germany, authorities reaffirm that emergency services will stay fully operational until conditions are stabilized and under control.
